Breastfeeding Counsellor

Presently I am training to be a breastfeeding counsellor.

Unfortunately breastfeeding in our society is seen as a feeding choice for mothers, rather than as the norm, that it is, for babies. As such Western women do not necessarily grow up watching their relatives and friends breastfeed, and when their own time comes they may not have access to wise and experienced breastfeeding mothers to support them as they learn. Breastfeeding counsellors are now available to fill this gap.

A breastfeeding counsellor is a mother who has at least nine months first hand experience of breastfeeding. She provides breastfeeding management support to other breastfeeding mothers on a volunteer basis via telephone and email, at breastfeeding support groups in her local area, and in her community.

Breastfeeding counsellors are available to all Australian women 24 hours a day, 7 days a week via telephone. They have undergone a certified training program in order to become counsellors. To contact a counsellor please call 1800 MUM 2 MUM (1800 686 2 686).
