Introducing Eleanor Carmel

Born 3:14pm December 29, unassisted after a 12 hour posterior labour. On January 1st she was lotus born sometime after 2am while we were sleeping. Post lotus birth she weighed 3.9kgs, so we suspect was over 4kg the day of her birth, when she was much chubbier.

She's breastfeeding like an expert and her big sister can't believe her luck now that Mumma's breasts are making so much milk! She told me that the boobie milk tastes like ''rainbow.'' The whole family is riding a lovely post birth high, head over heels in love with our newest member.

Full birth story here.

The world needs to see more photos like that. Elated, glowing mother, skin on skin right from the start, everything right at home. . . . so happy for you, dear Sazz.

You were not concerned that your daughter was born BLUE? For her sake, I dearly hope she has not suffered any brain damage during her birth. No doubt if she does, you will find some way to blame modern medicine instead of yourself.

Hello concerned reader.
If she had been blue I would not have been concerned because I have been present at normal births and know what a waterborn child looks like at the time of birth. I was concerned because she seemed white and was taking longer than her sister to take a sound. As it turns out she just took a moment to come into herself which is common. She ended up pinking faster than any baby I've seen before, once she adjusted to breathing the atmosphere.

The period of transition between relying on cord blood for oxygen to oxygenated air can be a scary one for new parents and care providers, but as long as the cord is intact there is rarely a need to worry.

No need for the snarky bullshit at the end of your comment. You do not care more about my child's brain development than I. And obviously we would know if something was wrong by now, her being over a year old and all and in perfect health.

Perhaps take your concern to the blogs of ignorant fear-mongerers who promote high risk hospital birth over normal healthy homebirth.

Also, it's customary to congratulate someone on their announcement of a new baby, but obviously basic courtesy does not apply to me because I'm one of those filthy homebirthers so far beneath you. In which case: feel free to keep your comments to yourself from now on.

Beautiful photos Sazz - thank you for sharing such an amazing and personal experience. I did have a small concern over your daughter's colour in the first photo until it jogged my memory of my research into water birth that confirmed for me that this is quite normal. I am currently 20 weeks pregnant and hoping to have a homebirth possibly in my spa in July. I was so traumatised by the horrific birth of my beautiful son almost 10 years ago that I could not imagine going back to a hospital to give them a 2nd opportunity to butcher and infect me. Thanks again for sharing and affirming my birth choice :)
